Editor’s Introduction
Hopefully members were not too inconvenienced by the delay in posting the February Bulletin. The meeting on the 2nd February, when we were scheduled to post out, was cancelled due to heavy snow. The Postal Auction date was extended by a week to give members a chance to receive and digest the catalogue. An updated listing of the Single Country and Thematic interests is included again this time. If you would like to receive material for your area of interest please contact Derek Ward with details. From a thematic point of view it could be a broad topic or a more specialised area and as you will see, we have a diverse listing already, so don’t be shy! The Society is sorry to record the passing of Mrs D E Berry, Robert McGillivray, who was the former Chief Engineer at the Scottish Office, Sqn Ldr John Spinks, Mr Stranks and John Thame. An obituary for John Thame is included later in this Bulletin.
Venue for our meetings This is still ongoing. All members who have attended our regular meetings in the last year or so, will be informed by a letter, e-mail or a telephone call once a date for the new venue is confirmed. A listing of contact details (telephone number and e-mail address if appropriate) has been prepared but if you have not passed your details to the Secretary please do so. Members who have not attended for some time (a couple of years) are reminded that they should inform the Meetings Organiser, 6 weeks in advance of likely attendance as a list has to be supplied for security reasons. Derek Rock is acting Meetings Organiser TFN.
A piece about the history of Somerset House, supplied by Derek Ward, can be found later in this Bulletin.
Volunteers urgently required That heading has probably made most members want to instantly turn the page but as you will see later in the Bulletin in the AGM Minutes, we are looking for two people to fill two important vacant posts. Our Librarian John Dennett has regretfully relinquished his post after many years service. We therefore require a new Librarian. Ideally this person needs to be a member who comes to the meetings at Somerset House to distribute books and articles, advise members on material but also to expand and add to the ‘paste-up’ folders that John has worked on in recent years. The second post is that of Postal Auctioneer as Denys Gage has relinquished his post after 5 years. The 2010 Postal Auction will be run by Derek Rock as an interim measure because the call for lots had to be placed in this Bulletin. A volunteer is required for the 2011 auction or this activity, which serves the wider membership not just those attending our meetings, will have to cease.
Please address all enquires initially to our President, Robert van Goethem.
