The Bulletin of the Civil Service Philatelic Society Founded 1948
1948 - 2008
No. 431 June 2008
Diamond Jubilee Special Edition
Editor’s Introduction It is a privilege for me as your Bulletin Editor to be assembling this special edition to mark the Diamond Jubilee of the Civil Service Philatelic Society. The format is a little different this time as much of the content has been written specifically for the occasion by Members. There are reports about the February and March talks and displays given as part of our celebrations. I have put together some historical details of the Society in its first year of existence and hope to compile some more notes for the next Bulletin. The AGM Minutes will come in the extra September edition. Margaret.

1948 Our Constitution and Rules state the Object of the Society as follows: ‘The object of the Society shall be to stimulate the collection of postage stamps and the study of philately.’ As stamps are at the centre of what we are about I thought it only right to show the Great Britain issues of 1948 marking the Silver Wedding Anniversary of HM George VI and HM Queen Elizabeth and the 1948 Olympic Games. The Silver Wedding issue consisted of two stamps the 2½ d and £ 1 values as shown below. Alongside is one of the stamps from the Omnibus issue and I have featured the 10/-value from Nyasaland. The Olympic issue is on the back page.
The 1948 GB Olympic Games Issue
The 1948 London Games, the first since WWII and following the Berlin Games of 1936 were the first to be shown on home television, but very few people owned sets in Great Britain. Four stamps were issued, as shown above, 2½ d, 3d, 6d and 1/-.
